Politics limited by geography

Now that globalization has taken effect and major cities look like multinational villages with workers and expats coming from the 5 continents as well as technology booming across the globe we would come to think that geography doesn’t play as much a major factor in politics as in the past but we are wrong.

UAE the Saharan land is now a water oasis and technology hub with people skiing in malls, fake storms are being created and we are covering the sea with land as well as creating a 50 km bridge from China to Hong Kong yet geography is still a major factor on the global political table.

China Refusing to let go of Tibet

China’s fear of an Indian invasion is the main reason it won’t let go of Tibet regardless of the many protests and monk suicides we witness.

The Tibet has long struggled to get out of Chinese ruling and have long witnessed acts of Tibetan monks setting themselves on fire to protest against the rule however China still refuses to let go of Tibet. Why? Fear of invasion from India is the main reason.

China and India are by far the most populated countries on the face of the earth and what separates them is the Himalayas which is in the buffer zone of Tibet.

If China lets go of Tibet it would be very easy for India to attach China and reach its mainland. This is the main reason China is keeping Tibet besides its need of its water of course.

The Chinese see Tibet from a geopolitical standpoint and not from a humanitarian one.

South Korea and North Korea’s conflict.

South Korea has much more land, economic power and the USA on its side however in the Korean conflict it is still the most vulnerable one and North Korea is the strongest. Why?

The answer is simple: Geography.

North Korea is gifted with mountains and hills and South Korea is plain flat making it viable to NK and very easy to attack.

In fact it would take North Korea 60 minutes to fire 500,000 round of bullets and missiles into Seoul the capital of South Korea. The attack would be from NK’s hills which is only 35 miles away from Seoul.

This is keeping South Korea vulnerable no matter the degree of strength it attains and this is helping keeping the conflict alive between the two countries.

The two above examples are an indicator of how geopolitics works; other popular examples are the US’s location which is unreachable by its enemies making it the strongest nation on earth, Russia’s vulnerability to Europe and the Middle East conflict.

Geopolitics remains and will remain a key player in politics no matter the power of globalization and multinational agreements and establishments.
